If you're looking for a basic, inexpensive tablet, then this will work for you.I've had this for approximately 1 month and so far so good.My uses are pretty standard (internet browsing, gaming, apps, etc.) Speed and interface seem to be pretty good, with a pretty good response rate.The battery life is pretty good, probably about 2-3 days with light to moderate use (about 2-4 hrs per day).I was considering some of the cheaper off brand tablets, but for a few dollars more I decided to go with the HP and am glad I did! So far this was a very nice little purchase with no regrets!

Poor quality pictures.My second hp slate in a yr and my last.My first one took great pix, but charging port broke after 5 months.This one has windows etc, which was not interested in that, but maybe some are.But it works ok so far, but I have not used it much after learning about the pix.
It will be my back up or for travel. The size is smaller than my last and no instructions or material in box. So it is used and you get just what you see. If you need help with setting up, have to go on internet and figure out.

Unfortunately it's not very good.

I quit using it after only about a year. It's picture quality isn't that good, it's INCREDIBLY slow even doing basic things like checking email. It freezes constantly if you want to play games on it. I got a Lenovo instead and haven't used this one since.

OK so first thing is that I ordered this tablet among many other items to be delivered by Christmas eve. Unfortunately, this never got to me even though it was tracked as being delivered. Amazon Customer Service was phenominal and promptly refunded my account after I went out to buy it in time for Christmas... 5 star service.

Since I was actually able to get the tablet elsewhere I decided to review. I am not a big tech person but I consider myself of intermediate technical level savvy. The Slate is sleek and has a great display even without HD the picture quality is really good. Easy set up and ready to use in minutes. Good speaker not top of the line (the Slate extreme comes with Beats audio if that's a deal breaker) but the sound is fine for listening to music at the office or washing dishes. I have portable speakers to pump up the volume when I need more umph. The camera quality is good on both the front VGA and rear 5mp. Expandable micro SD slot is a plus. Great game play for faves like Candy Crush, Angry Birds, etc. It is compatible with the new Sonic Dash and Angry Birds Go! games which aren't compatible on my Android phone (a big plus for my 5 year old). The best part is the battery life! Excellent, long lasting while in use or idle. I use consistently for hours without it dying. The most I have had it in use is 5 hours after it being fully charged and it still had 30%...and the unit doesn't overrheat even after continuous use.

It's great for email and web browsing. Streams Netflix (via the app not browser), Pandora and YouTube flawlessly.
I can even use video chat and its a clear conversation/picture. Bluetooth and Wifi work great...no hiccups or problems connecting.

The only negatives: 1. not compatible with Adobe Flash Player (not a big deal since the problemI had was solved by downloading the app for the services) 2. When in sleep mode it takes a few seconds longer to "wake up" after pressing th power button than my android phone but not more than 5 seconds (again not a big deal I'm just used to instant"wake up" so it takes a little getting used to).

This is the first tablet I have personally owned but I have used the Kindle Fire and Samsung Galaxy regularly ....it's definitely a contender at a great price point for the novice to intermediate tech user in need of a quality, basic tablet.

I was so disappointed with the Galaxy tablet I purchased before this. It was slow to load apps, non-responsive to touch, and getting the same apps I liked on my iPod were impossible to find. Had to send it back. Imagine my pleasant surprise with the S7. This is the Slate "Plus" 4200, which was new in Nov when I got it, not to be confused with the 2800 series, which had disappointing reviews. This one has two cameras, whereas the older (I understand) had only a rear facing camera of only 1MB. Only disappointment is that it has no charging light indicator. Not a big deal though. Charging time from 20% low is only 2 hours.Final disappointment (not tablets fault) is that none of the after market HP cases work with this tablet. Only the one HP offers will work with the new camera locations and hole alignments, and they want something like $45 for it. Not gonna happen. I bought an ill-fitting cheap-o to hold me over until some Chinese company comes out with one for under $20.

Update September 2019:
Well, she finally died, 5 years and 9 months after purchase. This has been one terrific little tablet. No issues. Easy to use and with an added sim card plenty enough storage for my audio books, ebooks and photos. Gonna miss her. Don't know if the HP Slate is still in production, but if it is, I would highly recommend it.

I purchased this tablet a few weeks ago and it sucks. The tablet freezes when playing games like subway surfers, angry birds, etc. The tablet gets hot quick and shuts down quite often. The tegra 3 processor is so slow. I hate this purchase and would not recommend anyone get this tablet. Save your money and get an ipad, nexus 7, nexus 10, windows 8 tablet, surface, or whatever else but don't buy this product. IT SUCKS!

I bought a HP Slate 7 (3400US) with free T-Mobile 200 MB/month. The device itself seems reasonable for the money. Do not expect it to perform like a Nexus 7. We use it for simple games, browsing, email, music, it performs well. I use it over wifi mostly, and even with good internet speed sometimes is slow to render websites. I watched Netflix HD movie, and was happy with the performance. You must have broadband service to get HD quality, obviously.

The problem with this device is that there are not too many accessories (eg. a decent case). I bought a cheap one, it is clunky, but seems to do its job.

I added a total of three users to this device, and each gets to customize it without affecting other users. This is important for me, so my personal information is not accessible to other users, and hopefully you can control what apps my young kids play. JellyBean 4.2.2 Andrioid version is pre-installed, and dont expect to get 4.4 (kitkat) any time soon. HP is slow in pushing these. No wonder they are loosing money.

Note: This does NOT come with a headphone, but that is not a big issue for me.

T-mobile customer service sucked big time, they had not clue about this free offer. On the day I received the tablet, I was playing with the settings and got locked out of the device "SIM disabled. PUK lock required to unlock" or something similar message came up. Telephone support was useless, they directed me to go to store. Store person wanted me to buy a one month data plan so she could activate my tablet with T-mobile. After back and forth, I was able to get a new SIM card, as the SIM itself was locked out. I inserted the new SIM, and tablet started to guide me through the activation process with T-mobile. T-mobile did not ask me for a credit card, sweet! Next day, the tablet said "NO service" and I have live in this area for many years, and I know there is service here. I called T-mobile and once again was disappointed with C. The customer service tried to tell me that I am in a dead spot but looking at the service map online. However, over the last 10 days, I have not had that problem again, even during severe weather.

For the money I paid, $130, it is a no brainer especially when you add the 200 MB/mo free data. I added SQUARE Trade warranty, which I had to use on my Kindle Fire, and they are excellent.

I am adding a 32GB microSD card for movies on the go. Have yet to try Skype, which will be one of the reasons I bough. The camera quality is acceptable to me, albeit it is a bit lower resolution. Again, I look at the price I paid, and so can't complain much. Battery appears to hold well, will find out more when I take it for a road trip.

Free 4G--when it works (and flaky GPS)

This does indeed come with free 4G. However it is much less reliable then my AT&T Samsung phone. I frequently do not receive a 4G signal when my phone does perhaps it is because is T Mobile.

The GPS is very unreliable, after being off by several hundred feet. Forget about using it for driving navigation, it often has you're on the wrong street. I also got it to use for geocaching but again it's extremely unreliable.

The charger is often unreliable and doesn't always make a connection or comes loose. For some reason in Europe it was much less reliable than in the United States although it is supposed to support 220 volts.

When I first got it it was constantly rebooting but a factory reset mostly fixed that.

For the price I suppose it's an OK deal, where else are you going to get free 4G at this cost?However device is overall not very good.

The performance of this tablet is pretty upsetting, it feels like a 2007 device being used in 2014 - It does let you surf the web and do some BASIC things and that's about it. If you want to anything more complex than that (but still normal stuff for any other tablet/smartphone):
-Apps crash
-Navigation/usability becomes a nightmare
-Battery drains much faster
-Voice commands just don't work

The tablet's design is great, feels like a pricier one and its weight is just ideal.

In summary, go for it if you only need it to surf the web or check your emails on the go. Don't buy it if it will become your main device, you won't regret buying it (it only costs $100) but you'll regret you lost 10 minutes of your time trying to do the simplest of tasks.

Love this tablet when its functional. However it will randomly reboot. Sometimes when I think its "asleep" its actually depleting the battery completely and a rapid pace. When its plugged in, it will often shutoff. Meaning you pick it up to use it and have to wait for it to boot.
Fast when its working but not impressed with sleep/powermanagement/battery at all. I am aware that I should expect rapid battery loss if I am playing some high end game. However when asleep and no games running, it should last overnight on a full charge.

Also the microUSB port is sensitive and I've read if you're not careful with it it breaks easily. Manufacturers need to stop competing on price and put out quality devices.

Its good after you have rebooted... when the HP Slate has been on for a little while it becomes very sluggish. The tablet will also on random occasions just completely disconnect from WiFi and the only way yo get it to re-connect is to reboot the tablet. I also had an issue with the plastic holding the power button in place as that broke... very small and flimsy piece... when I googled this I found a lot of people with the same issue.
I spoke to HP directly and they refused to send me another power button stating they do not provide these and my best option was to find a high street merchant who would fix it. There is also another WiFi issue in the sense that it does not pickup a signal if you are to far from your router. I am literally above mine and I get 1 bar connection if i'm lucky.. But both my work phone (iPhone) and personal phone (Windows Phone) will receive the connection with 4 bars when they are next to the tablet.

Overall not work the price for the hassle of having to reboot it just so it will work without crashing and obtaining an internet connection.

I have had this slate for 3 weeks now, and am still learning how to use it. All the YouTube videos make it look very easy, but this is a tricky machine to master.
First, it is useful to note that the tablet comes with a leather case that holds the stylus in the hinge. It would be great if the case had a fold to prop it up. Any other case that I have found that fits this tablet does not have a place to store the stylus.
I really bought this slate to take to meetings to take notes in Microsoft Onenote. I want it to work with handwriting with the stylus. It works very well to just write the notes on the slate. The small tip stylus is just like writing with a pen. Ink to text works reasonably well, but it is very far from perfect.
Drawing is much more difficult. I am a contractor, and I hoped that sketching would be easier and more flexible.
The stylus affects the screen by just hovering, so you can suddenly find yourself typing endless aaaaaaaa (I found a setting to change that), or closing a window, or opening another program.
Panning and zooming with fingers is not near as smooth as some android tablets I have seen. They say that in automatic mode that you can just tap twice with your finger, and then it will recognize fingers for pan and zoom, but the truth is that this is sporadic at best. There are supposed to be "flicks" that you can be program to do whatever you want, but getting that to work is a large challenge too.
It did lock up on me once, and it wanted to restore to an earlier restore point. I could not find how to manipulate the options when the computer was in it's pre-windows state. Luckily, I had a wireless mouse and I was able to plug the receiver into the USB slot. That solved that problem, but I could not find a way to do a hard reboot.

Ultimately, you might want to install Windows 8, but the natural screen resolution is too small to run most of the apps that come with W8.
All in all, I would say that they did not quite get the software right for my intended use. I still believe that with practice, I will get better at using it, but it is not as easy as HP would like you to believe.

I really have positive feedback about this product. As a business tool this slate cannot be beat. It is nice sized, responsive, and is actually productive with a full Win 7 and then I installed a full version of Office 2010 Pro. With that software this small computer is truely able to be productive on the road. The battery life is good, not great, but sufficient for off and on use during and entire day. The touch screen is responsive and reacts well using one or multiple touch guestures. The stylist is one of the huge advantages, it allows this computer to take notes and text input almost everything. That alone is worth the extra price over the other slate and tablet computers. I would reccommend this computer to anyone who needs to not only consume information but produce some information on a limited basis. This is a pretty nice example of a very capable commputer for almost any task and think it will only get better with Windows 8.

I have had this HP Slate for four months. I love having a tablet running windows. I also have an android tablet. And it has its place for playing games, web browsing, listening to music, etc. But you cannot beat a windows tablet for serious office work. Granted windows 7 isn't optimized for a tablet, but it still performs more than adequately. It is a little more sluggish than an android tablet, but I am sure windows 8 will address these minor issues. This is a great tablet and does what you have come to expect from a windows platform. It does not disappoint. Wifi is excellent, setup is a breeze. I am very happy with my slate.

If you like games, ipads and androids, don't buy this. If you are a professional who uses windows and microsoft office solutions, this is incredible. A full fledged PC. Earlier models had poor battery life, however now that the harddrive is solid state flash drive and not one with moving parts, the battery lasts for considerable use. My primary desire was to have a slate that would do great with handwriting recognition. This is amazing, my handwriting is so bad that I can not even read it some days - this slate figures it out extemely well. I could not be more satisfied. PLEASE READ ON FOR UPDATE

1/6/13 Update - I have been using this for some time. I still love it. However, there has been one major frustration and it has to do with the internal digitizer and the pen. The digitizer is inside and it is made by N-trig. The only pen I have and only one I have found to be compatible is the manufacturer supplied pen. I have replaced my original pen with another factory pen, I have been certain to keep all drivers updated, and I have optimized all settings and still the problem continues. I will try to describe it but it is a little difficult to describe. Quite often the slate and pen think you are trying to input when you are not. Say you are hovering over the screen with the tip of the pen 2-3 inches away, the slate starts receiving signals from the pen and you can easily click an icon, drag and drop something, highlight something, etc when you do not want to.It is so bad that I don't even use the pen anymore which means I do not have the handwriting capability that I bought it for. I have yet to find any other pen that works because it has to be a capacitive pen compatible with the N-trig digitizer. It is still an awesome full powered PC and I use it all day 5 days a week for work. I still recommend it, but on the basis of overall and not for the pen or for handwriting recognition. Changing rating from 5 stars to 3.

Love the slate.It does everything!!!Best tablet on the market, except for the screen.The touch is perfect.I did ad a blue tooth keyboard for typing a lot, but if you are a hunt and peck person, the on screen keyboard works as good as any.Wish HP would have put all thier touch programming on it, but they did send me a link to download it but I need an IT guy to do the final install.The best part is it does all the programs I want. Nice.I recommend this, as long as your not using it in the sun, too dim of a screen and you will be disappointed.

A useless product

I cannot imagine hp can make such a useless hardware for such a high price. Very slow atom process, pathetic screen resolution, poor battery life, no hope for upgrading to Windows 8 due to poor hardware, noise and very inaccurate N-Trig digitizer pen, the tablet left me nothing but to regret for the wastage of my nearly CD 900.
