If you're looking for a basic, inexpensive tablet, then this will work for you.I've had this for approximately 1 month and so far so good.My uses are pretty standard (internet browsing, gaming, apps, etc.) Speed and interface seem to be pretty good, with a pretty good response rate.The battery life is pretty good, probably about 2-3 days with light to moderate use (about 2-4 hrs per day).I was considering some of the cheaper off brand tablets, but for a few dollars more I decided to go with the HP and am glad I did! So far this was a very nice little purchase with no regrets!

Poor quality pictures.My second hp slate in a yr and my last.My first one took great pix, but charging port broke after 5 months.This one has windows etc, which was not interested in that, but maybe some are.But it works ok so far, but I have not used it much after learning about the pix.
It will be my back up or for travel. The size is smaller than my last and no instructions or material in box. So it is used and you get just what you see. If you need help with setting up, have to go on internet and figure out.

Unfortunately it's not very good.

I quit using it after only about a year. It's picture quality isn't that good, it's INCREDIBLY slow even doing basic things like checking email. It freezes constantly if you want to play games on it. I got a Lenovo instead and haven't used this one since.

OK so first thing is that I ordered this tablet among many other items to be delivered by Christmas eve. Unfortunately, this never got to me even though it was tracked as being delivered. Amazon Customer Service was phenominal and promptly refunded my account after I went out to buy it in time for Christmas... 5 star service.

Since I was actually able to get the tablet elsewhere I decided to review. I am not a big tech person but I consider myself of intermediate technical level savvy. The Slate is sleek and has a great display even without HD the picture quality is really good. Easy set up and ready to use in minutes. Good speaker not top of the line (the Slate extreme comes with Beats audio if that's a deal breaker) but the sound is fine for listening to music at the office or washing dishes. I have portable speakers to pump up the volume when I need more umph. The camera quality is good on both the front VGA and rear 5mp. Expandable micro SD slot is a plus. Great game play for faves like Candy Crush, Angry Birds, etc. It is compatible with the new Sonic Dash and Angry Birds Go! games which aren't compatible on my Android phone (a big plus for my 5 year old). The best part is the battery life! Excellent, long lasting while in use or idle. I use consistently for hours without it dying. The most I have had it in use is 5 hours after it being fully charged and it still had 30%...and the unit doesn't overrheat even after continuous use.

It's great for email and web browsing. Streams Netflix (via the app not browser), Pandora and YouTube flawlessly.
I can even use video chat and its a clear conversation/picture. Bluetooth and Wifi work great...no hiccups or problems connecting.

The only negatives: 1. not compatible with Adobe Flash Player (not a big deal since the problemI had was solved by downloading the app for the services) 2. When in sleep mode it takes a few seconds longer to "wake up" after pressing th power button than my android phone but not more than 5 seconds (again not a big deal I'm just used to instant"wake up" so it takes a little getting used to).

This is the first tablet I have personally owned but I have used the Kindle Fire and Samsung Galaxy regularly ....it's definitely a contender at a great price point for the novice to intermediate tech user in need of a quality, basic tablet.

I was so disappointed with the Galaxy tablet I purchased before this. It was slow to load apps, non-responsive to touch, and getting the same apps I liked on my iPod were impossible to find. Had to send it back. Imagine my pleasant surprise with the S7. This is the Slate "Plus" 4200, which was new in Nov when I got it, not to be confused with the 2800 series, which had disappointing reviews. This one has two cameras, whereas the older (I understand) had only a rear facing camera of only 1MB. Only disappointment is that it has no charging light indicator. Not a big deal though. Charging time from 20% low is only 2 hours.Final disappointment (not tablets fault) is that none of the after market HP cases work with this tablet. Only the one HP offers will work with the new camera locations and hole alignments, and they want something like $45 for it. Not gonna happen. I bought an ill-fitting cheap-o to hold me over until some Chinese company comes out with one for under $20.

Update September 2019:
Well, she finally died, 5 years and 9 months after purchase. This has been one terrific little tablet. No issues. Easy to use and with an added sim card plenty enough storage for my audio books, ebooks and photos. Gonna miss her. Don't know if the HP Slate is still in production, but if it is, I would highly recommend it.

I purchased this tablet a few weeks ago and it sucks. The tablet freezes when playing games like subway surfers, angry birds, etc. The tablet gets hot quick and shuts down quite often. The tegra 3 processor is so slow. I hate this purchase and would not recommend anyone get this tablet. Save your money and get an ipad, nexus 7, nexus 10, windows 8 tablet, surface, or whatever else but don't buy this product. IT SUCKS!

I bought a HP Slate 7 (3400US) with free T-Mobile 200 MB/month. The device itself seems reasonable for the money. Do not expect it to perform like a Nexus 7. We use it for simple games, browsing, email, music, it performs well. I use it over wifi mostly, and even with good internet speed sometimes is slow to render websites. I watched Netflix HD movie, and was happy with the performance. You must have broadband service to get HD quality, obviously.

The problem with this device is that there are not too many accessories (eg. a decent case). I bought a cheap one, it is clunky, but seems to do its job.

I added a total of three users to this device, and each gets to customize it without affecting other users. This is important for me, so my personal information is not accessible to other users, and hopefully you can control what apps my young kids play. JellyBean 4.2.2 Andrioid version is pre-installed, and dont expect to get 4.4 (kitkat) any time soon. HP is slow in pushing these. No wonder they are loosing money.

Note: This does NOT come with a headphone, but that is not a big issue for me.

T-mobile customer service sucked big time, they had not clue about this free offer. On the day I received the tablet, I was playing with the settings and got locked out of the device "SIM disabled. PUK lock required to unlock" or something similar message came up. Telephone support was useless, they directed me to go to store. Store person wanted me to buy a one month data plan so she could activate my tablet with T-mobile. After back and forth, I was able to get a new SIM card, as the SIM itself was locked out. I inserted the new SIM, and tablet started to guide me through the activation process with T-mobile. T-mobile did not ask me for a credit card, sweet! Next day, the tablet said "NO service" and I have live in this area for many years, and I know there is service here. I called T-mobile and once again was disappointed with C. The customer service tried to tell me that I am in a dead spot but looking at the service map online. However, over the last 10 days, I have not had that problem again, even during severe weather.

For the money I paid, $130, it is a no brainer especially when you add the 200 MB/mo free data. I added SQUARE Trade warranty, which I had to use on my Kindle Fire, and they are excellent.

I am adding a 32GB microSD card for movies on the go. Have yet to try Skype, which will be one of the reasons I bough. The camera quality is acceptable to me, albeit it is a bit lower resolution. Again, I look at the price I paid, and so can't complain much. Battery appears to hold well, will find out more when I take it for a road trip.

Free 4G--when it works (and flaky GPS)

This does indeed come with free 4G. However it is much less reliable then my AT&T Samsung phone. I frequently do not receive a 4G signal when my phone does perhaps it is because is T Mobile.

The GPS is very unreliable, after being off by several hundred feet. Forget about using it for driving navigation, it often has you're on the wrong street. I also got it to use for geocaching but again it's extremely unreliable.

The charger is often unreliable and doesn't always make a connection or comes loose. For some reason in Europe it was much less reliable than in the United States although it is supposed to support 220 volts.

When I first got it it was constantly rebooting but a factory reset mostly fixed that.

For the price I suppose it's an OK deal, where else are you going to get free 4G at this cost?However device is overall not very good.

The two stars I'm giving are 1 for the price (beat a $100 tablet) and the free internet for life (only 200Mb but it is FOR LIFE)

The performance of this tablet is pretty upsetting, it feels like a 2007 device being used in 2014 - It does let you surf the web and do some BASIC things and that's about it. If you want to anything more complex than that (but still normal stuff for any other tablet/smartphone):
-Apps crash
-Navigation/usability becomes a nightmare
-Battery drains much faster
-Voice commands just don't work

The tablet's design is great, feels like a pricier one and its weight is just ideal.

In summary, go for it if you only need it to surf the web or check your emails on the go. Don't buy it if it will become your main device, you won't regret buying it (it only costs $100) but you'll regret you lost 10 minutes of your time trying to do the simplest of tasks.

Nice tablet.Perfect size. Will fit in my (large) pocket and SO MUCH more viewable screen than a smartphone.I have owned an I-Pad (9" tablet) for about 2 1/2 years and this is 98% of I-Pad quality.Only short coming is that the screen sometimes dims a little bit right after you go to the webpage or App that you want to view.

This is my first Android device, but a friend says that his Samsung phone (on Android) ALSO dims a little right after you go to the webpage or App that you want to view.Still learning the Android system after years on Apple iOS but able to maneuver about 90% as proficiently after a couple of days.Battery life is acceptable but not great.

Slightly disappointed in T-Mobile data coverage.It is not as good in my (NE Ohio) area when compared to Verizon.BUT when you are in T-Mobile data coverage area, you can quickly & easily setup a hotspot on this device for friends to use with their WiFi devices.

I would definitely recommend this purchase to friends.

Love this tablet when its functional. However it will randomly reboot. Sometimes when I think its "asleep" its actually depleting the battery completely and a rapid pace. When its plugged in, it will often shutoff. Meaning you pick it up to use it and have to wait for it to boot.
Fast when its working but not impressed with sleep/powermanagement/battery at all. I am aware that I should expect rapid battery loss if I am playing some high end game. However when asleep and no games running, it should last overnight on a full charge.

This is my 2nd one. My first tablet power connection on the tablet went bad. so i purchased another after two yrs.. The 2nd tablet is a refurb, and now it wants to stay on only when its pluged in to power source.or when battery is full charged.sometimes that happens. somethings not right. so im sending this one back after 1 month. T-mobile did update the free 200 mb per month on the tablet for me. i always call them and give them my sim card number and they can apply the number to your tablet if you buy another one offering the same promotion.Hope this helps some one.thanks for all of your feed backs

It's a great design, but the screen looks terrible (too much backlight, silvery sheen, bad viewing angles), and there's no auto-brightness sensor. Also the microUSB port is sensitive and I've read if you're not careful with it it breaks easily. Manufacturers need to stop competing on price and put out quality devices.

The port was its major flaw , & I'm not confident it's been improved enough to mean much long term. The charging is a little touchy. It would not work plugged into a apple wall charging plug, it would not charge on one of the two PC computers we had and it started up very slowly.
