I'm a student and so my requirements were that it be portable, decent battery life, and quick on the internet, and have ability to run chem-cad chemical engineering software without any problems.
So far the battery life seems reasonable. I have my doubts that it is actually a seven hour battery, none the less its also not a 30 min battery either. It will definitely get the job done.
The keyboard is a joy to type on in my opinion, i notice it is a little more difficult to be precise with keystrokes if you are not typing with your hands in the correct posture.. then again that will give you hand cramps and slow you down anyways..
plenty quick with the IB-i3 processor. However I have not gotten the chemcad disk from the office yet to see how it runs, that will be the real test I believe and I will update my review once I have tried it out.
resolution on the 1600-900 is very appealing, much nicer than the 768 or whatever that is on most other ultrabooks. looks great on amazon prime and netflix. Also, not sure why but it really bugged me when i would pick up some other laptops and the screen would be wobbling back and fourth... but this one definitely doesnt have that problem, it is very solid once you openit. no wobble what so ever, so it doesn't feel cheap and plastic-like. Its a little difficult to open the screen up, which is good for me because I keep it in my backpack, so it doesn't get anything between the screen and the keyboard but i'm not sure how others feel about that.
The speakers aren't bad either, considering how thin the laptop is and how small those speakers must be I think they get the job done quite well. So no complaints here on that.
And probably the most attractive thing about this ultrabook is the bang for the buck, a unibody i3 ssd ultrabook that is this nice looking for only 600 bucks? I feel like it's a steal.
cons: -I do wish it had a back-lit keyboard, but it is a worthy trade-off for how thin the unit is. -The trackpad is a little funky, however I really don't think its as bad as everyone is making it out to be.. there is an update on vizio's website which they need to download I suppose.
Edit: This machine runs my chemcad software perfectly. Quick and responsive. Love this laptop!
When they say it doesn't come pre-installed with junk, that is not entirely true. There were a number of MS applications which I had to uninstall. BTW, there is no Windows 7 installation key with the laptop! If you decide to completely wipe the drive and reinstall Windows, you will have to come up with your own copy of Windows. I checked with support and they said I would have to call support and pay $35 for installation media with a key. To repair a Windows installation, you should press F8. I guess they have a hidden partion with an image of some sort to get you back to factory. I don't like the fact that it is wasting the hd space.
I was quite concerned that I might get one with the keyboard issue everyone has been reporting. I was very lucky because I haven't noticed any issues so far! The touchpad is pretty bad. We plan on using a mouse anyways. For those of you that don't fiddle around with settings, there is an option under mouse settings that turns the mousepad off when another mouse is attached. Also, the laptop comes with bluetooth so if you order a mouse for it, go bluetooth and save yourself a usb port.
I'm not certain, but the bottom half feels like rubberized plastic. I don't think it is aluminum. It doesn't feel like it has the same density.
Overall, we're quite happy with the laptop. I only wanted to point out some of the things I haven't seen mentioned so far.
Edit: 4/3/2013 I was wrong about the installation key. It was brought to my attention that it is located on the power brick.
Pros ---- 1. Price vs hardware -> Worth every penny. (Got it for $600 from Amazon, this value can't be beat. Everything else in this price range has HD3000 graphics slower processor and no SSD drive.) 2. SSD Drive -> Very Fast! (Disable Hibernation through command prompt for maximum stability.) 3. Design -> Absolutely Gorgeous -> Aluminum finish all around except bottom its hard plastic still looks amazing. 4. HD4000 Graphics -> League of Legends and WOW on medium with 40-60FPS ( Make sure in power management settings to set Intelgraphics to maximum performance if you plan to do light gaming on it while traveling or away from your main PC.) 5. I3 Ivy Bridge Dual Core with Hyper threading (4 threads 1.8ghz) With instant on laptop boots under 10 seconds.
Cons ---- Cant really think of any.. Had to upgrade touch pad driver for right click to work not really a con though. As I mainly use a mouse... Also gets a little warm when charging, not a con at all.
Other Thoughts -------------- Power Adapter Glows from orange to green as the battery charge progresses and stays solid green when charge is complete.. Looks kind of cool. I was actually surprised how well it pulls league of legends on HD4000.. Also had a random loading issue and mismatch error prior to disabling hibernation.. Just to put it out there if you have an SSD on any device you own and it seems to be running a little weird/slower then usual, disable hibernation through command prompt. " powercfg /h off " reboot. hibernation files tend to get corrupted sometimes and don't work well with SSD Drives. Other then that this is an amazing product Buy it.
